Services
At Mahaanui Kurataiao, we provide specialised resource and environmental management services to uphold mana whenua values across Te Tai o Mahaanui. Our dedicated team ensures culturally and environmentally responsible outcomes—protecting taonga for future generations.
Cultural Monitoring
We assist Papatipu Rūnanga in managing and safeguarding wāhi tapu and wāhi taonga. Cultural monitors are assigned to oversee any development involving ground disturbance in identified high-risk areas. By being on-site, they ensure that precautions are taken to protect culturally significant sites or materials, documenting any discoveries and guiding appropriate tikanga if required.
Cultural Values Statement (CVS)
A CVS outlines the cultural values associated with a specific location or resource. It may include general information on issues or desired outcomes but does not typically assess the potential effects of a proposed activity. These statements help identify and prioritise values related to a catchment, waterway, or other significant area, often informing environmental flow reviews and wider planning processes.
Cultural Impact Assessment (CIA)
A CIA is a detailed, professional evaluation of how a proposed activity might affect tāngata whenua values and interests. Requested by councils, applicants, or tāngata whenua themselves, a CIA identifies specific cultural and environmental impacts and makes recommendations to avoid, remedy, or mitigate adverse effects. Commonly used for Resource Management Act (RMA) processes, CIAs also inform applications under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act.
Planning and Environmental Services
Our team provides specialist input into policy and plan development, resource consent applications, and project planning. We integrate Ngāi Tahu values into planning processes, draft policy documents, and offer advice on discharges and other environmental matters. We also deliver training on mana whenua issues, Iwi Management Plans, and effective Iwi engagement. Additionally, we can help prepare consent applications to reduce risk, cost, and delays, and represent sound evidence at council, Environment Court, Board of Inquiry, or EPA hearings. Our services include policy review and implementation for Iwi, public, corporate, and individual entities, as well as gathering essential data to support statutory planning or resource management.
